Quick Comparison
Before getting into the detail, here's how the two games stack up across the factors that matter most to unit leaders and server administrators:
| Factor | Arma 3 | Arma Reforger |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | Real Virtuality (RV) | Enfusion (Arma 4's engine) |
| Mod ecosystem size | Enormous — 10+ years of content | Growing steadily since 2022 |
| Player count | Much larger active player base | Smaller but dedicated |
| Performance | Single-threaded, CPU-limited | Multi-threaded, significantly smoother |
| Voice comms | Requires TFAR or ACRE2 | Built-in VON, no external tools needed |
| Crossplay | PC only | PC + Xbox + PlayStation |
| Arma 4 relevance | Different engine, skills partially transfer | Same engine — direct preparation for Arma 4 |
| Mission/scenario variety | Unmatched — thousands of community missions | Limited but expanding |
| Life RP / Exile / Wasteland | Fully developed ecosystems | Not yet available in comparable form |
Where Arma 3 Still Wins
Arma 3 launched in 2013 and has accumulated over a decade of community content. That depth is simply not replicable in the short term by any newer title, including Reforger.
The Mod Ecosystem
The Steam Workshop for Arma 3 contains tens of thousands of mods — everything from full total conversion mods to individual vehicle packs, terrains, and mission frameworks. Mods like ACE3 (advanced combat environment), TFAR (Task Force Arrowhead Radio), RHS (Red Hammer Studios), and CUP (Community Upgrade Project) have been developed and refined for years by large, dedicated teams. These mods form the foundation of virtually every serious milsim unit's server setup and have no direct equivalent in Reforger yet.
Mission Variety and Frameworks
Arma 3 has mission frameworks that took years to build — Altis Life, Exile, Antistasi, Liberation, Wasteland, and hundreds of bespoke unit missions. If your community runs Life RP, survival, or persistent campaign missions, Arma 3 is the only viable option in 2026.
Active Player Base
Arma 3 consistently maintains a much larger concurrent player count than Reforger. If you are building a public server or running open recruitment, filling a server is significantly easier in Arma 3. The community is deeply embedded — forums, discords, mission repositories, and modding communities have been running for over a decade.
Where Reforger Has the Edge
Despite being newer with a smaller mod library, Reforger has meaningful advantages — particularly for units thinking beyond 2026.
Performance and Stability
Arma 3's RV engine has well-known performance ceilings. Running 60 players on a heavily modded server will push a capable machine hard, and desync under load is a common complaint from server operators. Reforger's Enfusion engine handles multi-threading properly, distributing workloads across CPU cores. The result is noticeably smoother server performance at equivalent player counts, with fewer physics and netcode artefacts.
Built-In Voice Communications
Arma 3 has no native radio system. TFAR and ACRE2 fill this gap, but both require every player on the server to have the mod installed and configured, TeamSpeak running alongside the game, and a server-side plugin active. This adds friction to onboarding new players and introduces another failure point. Reforger's built-in VON provides direct speech and a functional radio system out of the box — no external software required.
Crossplay
Reforger supports PC, Xbox, and PlayStation players on the same server. This is a meaningful advantage for recruitment — you are not limited to the PC player pool. For communities that have members across platforms, or that want to expand by lowering the entry barrier, Reforger's crossplay is a genuine differentiator.
It's Arma 4 Preparation
This is the most strategically important argument for Reforger. Arma 4 runs on Enfusion. The server tools, mod architecture, admin workflow, and performance characteristics of Reforger will transfer directly to Arma 4 in a way that Arma 3 experience simply cannot. Units that are running Reforger servers today will be far better positioned to launch on Arma 4 day one than units that stayed exclusively on Arma 3.
Server Operator Perspective
From a pure server administration standpoint, Reforger is easier to manage. Mod distribution via the in-game Workshop eliminates the SteamCMD update cycles and manual mod management that Arma 3 operators know well. Server configuration is more standardised. There are fewer moving parts overall.
That said, Arma 3 server administration has a much larger knowledge base behind it. If something breaks on your Arma 3 server, there is almost certainly a forum thread, a Steam guide, or a community Discord with the answer. Reforger's community knowledge base is growing but is not yet as deep.
Which Is Right for Your Unit Type
- You run Life RP (Altis Life, Tanoa Life)
- You depend on ACE3, TFAR, or RHS for your ops
- You run a public server and need maximum player pool
- Your unit has an existing Arma 3 mission library
- You run Exile, Wasteland, or survival modes
- Your players are PC-only
- Your unit wants to be Arma 4-ready on day one
- Server performance and stability are a priority
- You want to recruit across PC and console
- You want built-in radio without TFAR dependency
- You're a newer unit building from scratch
- You want simpler server and mod management
The Verdict
There is no single right answer, but there is a clear pattern based on what your unit is actually trying to accomplish.
If you have an established Arma 3 community built around specific mods or game modes that don't yet exist in Reforger, stay on Arma 3. The content depth and player base are simply not matched by Reforger today. There is nothing wrong with continuing to run Arma 3 — it's an excellent game with an active community that will remain viable through and beyond Arma 4's launch.
If you are building a new unit or want to be strategically positioned for Arma 4, Reforger is the better investment of your time right now. Learning the Enfusion engine, building familiarity with Workshop-based modding, and establishing your community on the platform that will power Arma 4 is a significant head start that Arma 3-only units won't have.
The strongest position is running both — maintain your Arma 3 server for existing operations while running a Reforger server as your Arma 4 training ground. Many well-organised units are doing exactly this heading into 2026.
